Yesterday we headed to the beautiful Christ Church in Spitalfields. The programme explored music from throughout the church year, from Corelli’s Christmas Concerto to JS Bach’s cantata ‘Ich habe genug’ (with bass Marcus Farnsworth). And there was a rare chance to hear Zelenka’s Lamentations and Wassenaer’s Concerto Armonico – beautiful and much neglected works.
Perhaps the most striking thing about the performance was that it wasn’t conducted, nor was it directed from the violin or harpsichord. Instead, David Watkin and his cello were plonked right in the heart of the orchestra, directing and playing at the same time.
